If I were to sum it up, I think parts of the show really had me. I mentioned it in the past. I kind of liked how like some of the cinemat cinematics were like throwbacks. And I thought that was kind of cool. I like the you know the intro type thing. I thought it was one of those shows that kind of always has you on edge, which I don't actually like all that much.

Yeah, you were like plugging your ears a lot, yeah.

And but sometimes like, oh, that's you know, that might be that's probably what it's going for, right? Yeah. Kind of keep you on the edge.

But the problem I had with it in general was that it really maybe could have been six episodes or just a movie. Right? Because like some of the thrills weren't worth it. Yeah. I think some of the storytelling could have been quicker. Like you didn't have to.

We get the point. We get it. Yeah. And some of the things were kind of overly stretched.

Some were overly stretched, and I feel like that kind of made the m more major plot points a little harder for me to pick up on. I guess. Or you just pick up on too late, and it's like I d these other things, like I don't I don't know. I don't I didn't care about as much.

Yeah, and I think if it was a movie, it would almost had would have had better momentum and held the tension better because there was a lot of tension, like you said, that feeling on the edge of your seat, but then like the episode ends and you wait a week, and then you're kind of like not in that space anymore, and then you start the next one, and I feel like a movie would really hold that better.

Right. There's just a couple episodes in the middle where just like uh you know, could have done it out of it.

A lot of them at the beginning, I feel I feel like the second half of this, like the th I really was intrigued, not hooked, but I was hooked on the last like two episodes. Yeah. That was like, I gotta play the next one. So it eventually got me hooked, but it took all the way to the end.

But the whole time I was intrigued. I agree with you that it was really like stylistic and I like the atmosphere and I like the cinematography and the choices that they made with how they produced it and directed it and styled it. I really liked Javier Bardem as Max Cady. I think that he was like really charismatic, but also like, you know, he was a maniac. I mean, he just played he played both parts really well. I felt like I had a lot of empathy for him and like sympathy for him, but he was also so awful.

Well, you didn't, yeah, you didn't really know what to make of him at first.

Yeah, he was just really intense and creepy, and I just think he really delivered. I also think that everyone in general was pretty good and in acting. Did you know that Kate Winslit's son is the son?

I'm like, she has a son that's like an adult. Crazy. But, anyways, I I don't know if that's my takeaway.

I just think of Nepo babies.

Yeah. Um Nepo babies are everywhere in Hollywood, though.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. What can you do?

Yeah. I do think that um one thing also with the show though, like along with it being kind of stretched out and redundant at times, I was so annoyed with all the characters and the choices. I was so frustrated. And I know like they're supposed to be teenagers, but they're just like making like the two teenagers their kids, like oh right. I just like was getting so frustrated with some choices.

And um, I hate that.

It's like the horror movie where it's like, yeah, don't go in the basement, you know? Don't don't don't run into the woods by yourself.

Yeah, yeah. Just there were just some choices. I was like, uh, and I feel like maybe they were a little bit of a stretch, but I never and you you have you know what my number one main grow was.

Yeah, I mean you you and accents, you are you really like that's a make or break for you. Yeah. Because this one you could understand the accent. You know, some if you can't understand the accent, show's over, right? This one you could understand it, but you just thought it was bad.

Yeah, it was just like overly um forced, this overly forced southern type of accent that only she had and no one else did. So that's what it was confusing. Like her kids didn't have it at all. Yeah. Um I do think it got better. I feel like it was way more obvious and pronounced at the beginning of the series, and by the end, I wasn't like I wasn't distracted by her accent by the end of the series, but Oh, we're still in accents.

And the show did too. But yeah, overall, um, overall I enjoyed it. I think it was a little long and it could have been a movie. Sometimes you're gonna want to scroll.

The one with Robert De Niro De Niro from the 80s. I guess so. It is different. This is like a reimagined remake. Because of its like a different amount of kids, the family dynamics are a little bit different. Obviously, it's modern, they utilize like social media and other modern things in this one.

But yeah, it's but the same actress I thought that was.

Julia Lewis played in the original, she was the daughter of the lawyer. And in this one, she plays Max Cady's sister or like half sister. I thought that was kind of interesting. Yeah, it was interesting that she was in both. Yeah, weird little random fact. Yeah. But yeah, I will say this one to me, also, just for anyone out there, it does lean a little bit, it has like a horror feel to it too. It's kind of creepy and eerie. And I actually had a nightmare one night from one of the scenes, and I like this kind of stuff. Like, I'm okay with being scared. But there were some, there are some things that I was like, whew, that really like spooked me. And I had a nightmare about it, and I woke up in the night and I was like, that's bizarre. So, anyways, just putting that out there. What is your time crunch rating on this Cape Fear?

Okay. So that that lands you in the meh, watchable but forgettable inconsistent.

Yeah, I mean, that that uh sums up my thoughts, I guess. I I'm not gonna re-watch it, that's for sure.

I'll I'll say six. All right. The next show that we are going to talk about is Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.

So similar to Cape Fear, I feel like this one did take me a little while to get hooked. Cape Fear took me like a solid eight episodes to be hooked. Ouch. Until like the last two. This one I would say probably took like three or so. I did eventually become hooked though, and really looked forward to each episode when it would come out. I really enjoyed this show a lot. I actually I hope it gets greenlit for a second season. The this one does. Um, for anyone out there who likes things to wrap up, this one, the central plot does get wrapped up, but other things become open as the season progresses. And so, like the central thing gets wrapped up in this, so you'll feel good about that, but it does leave it open for a second season. It has not yet been greenlit for a second season yet. So I don't know if they'll have one, but I can't imagine that they wouldn't because I do think that this one's getting some love. Um, and I mean, I thought the acting was really good. I really loved the lead in this.

Yeah, I uh that stands out too. I like the main character.

Yeah, she was really good, and I love Jake Johnson too as her ex-husband. I think he's I really haven't seen him in too much. I mean, obviously mean girl, or not mean girl, good girl, what's that called? New girl. New girl. He was a new girl, all the girls. And yeah, I also I also really liked uh the twists. I thought like they just like kept coming and it just got more and more interesting for me. And yeah, I felt really locked in. I do think that the twists were twisty and chaotic and in like the good ways, but it did veer a little bit more into implausible for me at times, and I kind of like rolled my eyes a little bit, and I got a little confused. Did you get confused?

Yeah, I mean, I I mentioned this in an earlier episode, but I liked how at least in the beginning of the story, like maybe the first few episodes, everyone is very upfront with each other, right? Like she went to the scene of a mur murder, she and she told the cops that, right? She didn't hide it for 10 more episodes. And that I really appreciated that was a you know a refreshing take on this type of show. But then in the later half of the show, they did a lot less of that. Yeah, it kind of that part went downhill, but then it got me thinking, it's like, oh, they're just setting it up for a second season.

Yeah, I mean the character choices were sometimes dumb and like why would you do that? It's just kind of annoying.

I I want I want it to go on. I enjoyed the show. I guess I do want it to go on, but I I guess I was part of me was thinking it was gonna wrap up.

Yeah, I did think it was gonna wrap up. I I guess I maybe thought it was a miniseries. I feel like miniseries are just so common now that I almost go into a show thinking it's gonna be a miniseries automatically.

And I really think they they could have with the plot they had, but now they're trying to make the um you know the the bad organization like you know has um a bigger reach than you thought of at first.

And it's like, yeah, I think things are deeper and deeper and bigger than you originally thought.

Yeah, and it's like okay, I can see that being interesting, you know, we'll see how it plays out, but I also can see it's like, yeah, it's bigger than you thought, but also not too big that you can't end it in a single season. And so it'll be it could go either way for the second season. Um, one thing I did want to mention that you didn't mention uh as part of the things you liked, so I like kind of like the soundtrack too. Like they had some good songs inserted there. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I I think I have one of the talking heads covers on my my Spotify list now. For sure. And just threw that in at the end there.

Um, yeah, but I really liked the I really liked the main character. I think she was witty enough with without it being too much.

Yeah. A lot of the characters were witty enough. It was like a little funny, but not too much.

And her her situation was more I I mean, it was just kind of realistic. Like she was just like a divorced mom trying to um do the best for her daughter, like going through a divorce with someone who's trying to, you know, manipulate her into doing things she might not want to do and how that impacts your everyday life. Um, and so I I thought that that character was interesting.

The one thing, so this one it caught me off guard at first, but I eventually got more into it just because we were coming off of Margot's Got Money Troubles, and this was uh they had the same like online, you know.

Yeah, like the whole premise is she's on call with a cam boy and the cam boy gets murdered, and then she's she's like on the hook for his murder or something, right? Yeah, and I thought it was it goes a lot bigger than that, but that was kind of like the initial thing, which I wasn't my favorite. I was like, eh, another cam board coming off the OnlyFans or whatever. Especially after Margot's got money, yeah, but that is definitely not like correct what it is about. I mean, it is, but it gets better.

Yeah, I mean that ends up being a minor plot point. They do stick with it for a while, but you end up that's just a small piece of puzzle. Yeah, um, I think I'd give it I think I'll give it a seven and a half. It uh I didn't really know uh what to make of it at first. Like I said, it was it had a weird taste in my mouth after with the whole Camboy stuff, I think, just because it was like, oh why there's two shows like this um that had that as a theme, but it's like it's really not the main theme. That's just um a small part of the show. Uh but yeah, I liked it overall. How about you?

I'd give it an eight, so similar to you, it's in that well-made and enjoyable with minor issues kind of category area. I think my biggest thing is it did get a little too chaotic and plotty for my liking. I don't I like twists and turns, but I also don't like it to be so like you don't want to have to take notes. Yeah, yeah. I did have to like stop and talk it out a little bit. Like, wait, what? You know, and and sometimes that's just unnecessary. All right. The next show that we're gonna talk about is well, I guess I'm talking about this because you did not watch it, Mike.

All right, so I'm gonna be honest, I expected it to be much worse. The trailer makes it look worse than the trailers. Yes, they made it look very overly Hallmark-esque and cheesy. Yeah. And to the point where I really wasn't planning to watch it at all, but I needed a new walking pad show.

And since I knew you weren't interested in this one, I'm like, uh, maybe I'll just like give it a try and see. And it was definitely, I'm here to report, it was definitely cheesy at times, and it did lean a little bit into the Hallmark vibe lane. But it also had more going on than I expected.

Oh, they had that. A goddamn pajama dance party. That's so cheesy. But the cast had really great chemistry, they're all seasoned actors. However, I'm probably, I don't know, this might be a hot take.

But I really didn't care for Jennifer Garner in this. I think that she was trying too hard to be funny, especially in moments that moments are clearly written as jokes, like, oh, this is supposed to be kind of like a little humor here, but she really just her delivery just made it feel like just cringe and stupid and not funny. And I don't think she's a funny person. I don't know. I think she just like also tends to play this like overly sweet, goody-goody character or something. The way that she does it just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I just didn't really like her character. But I loved the other ones, and I loved the the casting choices that they made like across the board.

She was in that one thriller that we watched, I think it was called The Last Thing He Told Me, where she was the um the wife of a guy who goes missing, and then he had a daughter, like a teenage daughter, and she's kind of like trying to figure out what happened to him while navigating that. She she does drama really well, I think, Jennifer Garner. And like I just think that when she kind of does the like, I don't know, lighthearted stuff sometimes it just comes off as like it's like she's made for Hallmark. I don't know. I don't know.

She has some really great moments in this, but just like overall, I just feel like it would have been different if they had cast someone else, I think. Okay. Who could go a little bit more, be a little bit more vulnerable and real and not like I don't know. I don't know the word. I should have written it at this point.

I I mean I'm still having a hard time, having a hard time with this because like it's not as if the from reading that summary, if she's a food influencer, living it up in luxury Nantucket, like that's it's not selling me anymore on this. But you're saying you you liked it. You liked it more than you thought.

I liked it more than I thought. Um, I think that so the the show is funny at times and it's heartfelt and it's occasionally relatable. There are it's like cozy, visually appealing. It's a good summer vibe show. I mean, it's just like beautiful people in a beautiful house on a beautiful beach.

Feels feels good, but yeah, they are like there are a lot of moments where you're just like, okay, this is just like a bunch of kind of rich women arguing with each other in an An Tucket mansion. Yeah. You know? Got a little tiresome. There was a lot of like they don't like each other and you know, like being mad at each other and nitpicking and kind of grudges and stuff like that. And I'm just I don't love that, like pinning women against each other, and that's not really always how it goes. And but there was more to it. It wasn't just that she lost her husband and was like having a slumber party with her friends, they all have something that they're going through, like someone was about to lose their job, someone's dealing with a potential life-threatening diagnosis, someone else's husband is going through a lawsuit, and so there was more going on than just the main character stuff, and so that made it more interesting to me.

Do you think I would have liked it at all?

No, okay, so no, I don't think you would have liked it at all. Um, and I like I said, it was something that had kind of it was kind of cozy, kind of easy just to binge through when I was on my walking pad. I rolled my eyes and there were some moments of cheese, but there were some heartfelt good moments and I think good acting uh for the most part. So I would say that I'm not gonna remember this one, sure, but it was enjoyable to get me through my walks. Okay, but I do think there are some people who are gonna love it and seem to love it. I just like can't do cheese very well. Yeah, and I think if you're okay with the cheese, like you're probably gonna love it. But on my time crunch critic rating, I'm gonna give it, I'll give it a five.

Okay, so there are a few shows that we started, but not all of the episodes of the shows are out yet. And we are gonna give y'all our full reviews once they wrap up, which they'll all be pretty much wrapping up by like early September. So in just a few more weeks, but we wanted to just put them on your radar. The first show is Furious on Hulu. It's a crime drama that follows an FBI agent hunting a female serial killer with Emmy Rossom in the lead role. We've only watched two episodes, I think, so far, right? And I think there are three out, but we watched two. I think it's a little bit of a slow start. I think it will pick up. I think it has potential. I'm definitely gonna keep watching. What are your thoughts, initial?

I I do think it could be. Good, but right now it kind of gives me the ick a little bit. Yeah, it's the subject matter.

But it's not as if we, you know, we've seen this shows about this stuff in the past, but it's like right now, it's like a little uncomfortable, a little icky. Right. Um, but it does seem like it could be a good detective show, and we'll see.

Yeah, we will see. Another show that we're watching right now is called Lucky, and this one is on Apple TV. Apple TV is really like we got a lot of shows that we watch on Apple TV right now. Yeah. They really have some good ones. So Lucky is a crime thriller miniseries that follows the resourceful Lucky, that's her name, as she's pursued by both the FBI and the family she stole money from. The result is a fast-paced cat and mouse game filled with action twists and betrayals. I think we've watched four episodes.

So nearly half of the season. I'm enjoying it more than I expected. I didn't love it after one episode, but I would say I'm into it now. But it is very, very action-y, action-heavy.

So the I don't want to spoil anything, but yeah, the plot. I think the plot is the story.

Um, I think just at first it was kind of like, oh, okay, they're con artists. I'm kind of like, I don't like people just like robbing people and con artists, but it started to get it's more than just like, oh, we're gonna go steal money from someone. It's there's other stuff going on and the con is is different than I expected.

Yeah. I'm not quite hooked yet.

I wouldn't say hooked, I'm just enjoying it more than I expected.

I'm I'm not quite there. I th I think like in most situations she gets a little bit too lucky. Like, you know, how do they keep how do the police keep kind of messing this up? Um type of thing. Yeah, you're kind of rolling your eyes. It's all a little bit too convenient, and for whatever reason, like the um it was almost like a cartoon villain that um is kind of you know the the main um or one of the the bad guys. Um and it's just like I just I don't know, I don't I don't see it. I need I need that to be a little grittier, I suppose. Yeah. That element and not like luxury.

Perhaps. We're also watching Silo season three right now. And for those unfamiliar, silo is a dystopian sci-fi drama about a community living in a massive underground silo to escape a toxic world. This season, so this is season three, it dives deeper, I guess more into like the silo's history.

More so, and it focuses on memory control. I'll just say that. Sure. That's a heavy focus. Um, I'm enjoying it overall. I I definitely have some complaints and some thoughts, but I think I'm just gonna share that until we finish the season because I know we're gonna finish it and talk about it, but I think I'm enjoying it more than season two.

Yeah, I'll say that. I'll say that as well. I thought season two was pretty slow, yeah. And we only really finished it because season three was right, right.

We like we stopped watching season two because we were like, we just can't do this. Walked away, and then season three came out, and we're like, should we just finish season two quick? And I mean, that was rough. We were like, uh, but as a whole, like I I like this. I like this dystopian future type thing.

There's a lot of elements of of the set like the all three seasons that I do enjoy. I think some play out in a way that I don't like I don't really care for. Like there are yeah, like the even though the the plot is interesting, the way it plays out is kind of cheesy, I guess. But I like that's not the case for all of them. Um it's just it's not like the perfect dystopian future m you know series for me. Oh, yeah. But there are parts that like are interesting enough that you know keep me coming back. And I like I agree with what you said. Season three is definitely better than season two so far. And I do like knowing the history more, and the history seems you know pretty relevant uh to the current times, which seems kind of interesting.

All four seasons of this are on Netflix. This is a crime comedy drama series about three suburban mothers who turn to crime, starting with robbing a grass a grocery store. Is it coming back to you now? To solve their financial problems, only to get pulled into a deeper, dangerous, like criminal world, basically. It stars Christina Hendricks, Retta, and May Whitman. I really enjoyed this one when it originally aired. This was back in like 2018. It was a while ago, and I have not watched it since, but I still remember it and I think about it from time to time, and I think that that says something. Actually, when I was watching the five-star weekend, I one of the things I was thinking about is like I love seeing like a female cast and like the chemistry of the female cast, and then it made me think of good girls because this was their chemistry is really good, and this female led cast, and it just made me think of it. And also kind of Lucky reminds me of it too, because I feel like there's they're in this kind of criminal world and she's pulled into it, and I feel like that's what happens here with these women. Now it's a very different tonal show, it's more, it's like I mean, it's a little uneven. It can kind of bounce between family drama, comedy, and crime thriller. But it didn't really bother me because I really love Christina Hendricks specifically as the lead in this. And um I just think that this one is bingeable, it's a lot of fun. There's uh fast-paced crime drama stuff that keeps things moving, but then there's family drama storylines that are relatable and entertaining, and I just really liked it. I do think this one, I I want to say it was on NBC. It wasn't on a streaming platform when it first came out, and I feel like I think it was it was like NBC or ABC, I think it was NBC. And I feel like this show, if it had gone straight to streaming, like in a in a time like now, they could have done so much more because I do feel like they were kind of like working in the confines of the network boundaries. Because if it I feel like it wanted to maybe dare to be a little darker or a little grittier, like a little more um like breaking bad, but it couldn't. It had to stay like PG 13. Sure. You know what I mean? And I feel like I don't know. That's what what I just it's just missing a little bit of like edge and grit. Yeah, it's a little bit more glossy, but it's very entertaining. I will say this one is four seasons and it does not wrap up, it got canceled, right? And that really sucked because I think that there are a lot of people who won't watch a show if there's not like a clean ending, you know, like and it sucks. It sucks that shows get just canceled, right? And then you get invested in them. But and this one did, so I will put that out there. But to me, it was still really, really good, and um, I think it's still worth the watch, even though it kind of leaves you hanging. But I mean it kind of left you hanging in a happy spot, I'll put it that like a hopeful spot.

I don't remember now. Season one definitely stood out as like my favorite show in a while when it when it was out. And it's four seasons, by the way. Four, okay. So I didn't I don't remember when I stopped, but the first one was so good. I so good. I think it's because like I remember you know, I was of an age when you know Jurassic Park came out, and it had so many new elements to the movie that it was just like such a new experience for me that that movie is like forever etched in my mind, uh, for a number of reasons. And this, if I'm remembering it right, and and maybe get angry at me if I'm not here, but I'm pretty sure this was the precursor to Jurassic Park book-wise. Um, and because the the idea is similar, right? You have a um place you can visit where they have brought creatures to life. This time not through um DNA, bringing back old creatures, but it's basically just AI robots in um this kind of western world. So it's kind of sci-fi meets western. So people go out pay to go on vacation there, and you can play out these stories, like you can keep it very simple, just like hang out in the saloon, or you can go on these big, like I would call them quests, but you go on these big adventures, and you know, you kind of you can go really far down the rabbit hole in all these different storylines, but behind the scenes, you know, even though these are you know robots that are playing out AI robots that are playing out these storylines, all of a sudden you start to remember. And eventually, you know, as all the AI um sci-fi shows go, you know, they become self-aware and yada yada yada, and what happens. And so this one it was it was so interesting though, because you had that element to it, but then you had like they kept bringing up all these strange like puzzles, you know. One of them they were calling they called it the maze, right? And so, you know, what is the maze? Is it something physical that you know the tourists at this place can go and find? Like, are are you just one quest step away from unlocking the maze and discovering the secrets of the island, or is the maze something only unique to the AI? And it it was a really super interesting show. Um, definitely worth the watch. I think I I really enjoyed it, but then you know you can imagine a show like this that it can go in any number of different ways. It went in like I I think I remember like it just got so convoluted, like it just ended up going in all the ways. It's like this is just just doesn't work, right? Yeah, you gotta rein it in.

And then it did get canceled kind of abruptly, and so it didn't wrap up. So the last season is season four, and it's like it you're you might not be satisfied because it's not really an ending, so and but I I just it had a but season one is worth the watch just to experience the world and experience the the show because it was a good show.

It had a sense of adventure to it, but also it adventure the mind.

It was really one of a kind at the time too, because it was like 2016 when it came out, and um yeah, like groundbreaking, I would say. I would put it. It really it was fresh and new.

This is also premiered on August 5th, so all these are August 5th. So The Shards is a thriller series from Ryan Murphy based on Brett Easton Ellis' novel. It is set in 1980s Los Angeles. It follows a group of privileged high school students at an elite prep school as a serial killer, the trawler, terrorizes the city, coinciding with the arrival of a mysterious new student. The show explores themes of identity, obsession, and the dark side of adolescence through the eyes of aspiring writer Brett. So a coming-of-age thriller, but it's about wealthy teens. So, like, eh, we'll see. But it's in the 1980s, which is kind of cool. And it is based on a best-selling novel, so it could be good.

Because they're they're releasing them in a like a kind of a strange way, and they're like, oh, it's because it's so terrible. And so this this show, because it's such a because the fans are so passionate about the source material, like it's it's hard to tell, like, like, are people watching this? Do people like this? Do people hate it? Like, is it just a small few that are speaking out because they're so passionate? But um, it's coming, and I'm gonna watch it.

I will say also like just you just made me think of um so on HBO, they're doing a superhero drama series based on the DC comics Green Lanterns, which I'm not a DC comic, I'm not really like Marvel DC anything, really. But I mean, there are people probably out there, but it follows um Kyle Chandler's in it. He was in Friday Night Lights, he was the coach, but he him and some other guy are like investigating the murder on Earth that leads to a larger cosmic mystery. Um, so it's like a detective fiction with sci-fi. It says with sci-fi drawing inspiration from true detective and focusing on a grounded earth-based story with cosmic elements. Sounds kind of cool. I wish it didn't have like the fact that they say like DC comics, Green Lanterns, that that makes me not want to watch it. But just looking at, you know, a sci-fi detective thing, that sounds cool. Yeah. So I'm like, should we give it a chance and try not to think about the superhero like DC comics angle?

I think the way you just described it makes me interested because it's like if you have these interesting stories with just like a hint of superhero in them, that's where I tend to get hugged.
